Guspirus by Vanessa Linares
Maeska’s collaboration with Vanessa Linares is the result of a friendship that grew out of a chance meeting with the artist in early 2019. In this new collection, we’ve combined the practical side of KCB with the fun, nutty world of the guspirus.
Here, the artist tells us about the world she has created through her art:
Guspirus. I am because we are. Yo soy porque nosotros somos. Ni naiz gu garelako.
There is a place called Ubuntu, where the guspirus live in peace and harmony enjoying the colours, music and flavors of Mother Nature. They teach us about a more interconnected world. Ubuntu embodies the ideas of connection, community and mutual caring for all.
‘I am because we are’ is a very common expression used by the guspirus. To them, happiness means nothing unless we are all happy.
The guspirus try to remind us all of this. We are all connected, and it’s up to us to take care of each other.
The name ‘guspirus’ comes from two words that bounced around in Vanessa’s head before emerging in the shape of little animals and splashes of color. The word is a combination of guspira, which means ‘spark’ in Catalán, and suspiro, or ‘sigh’, a word that brings to mind a sense of liberation, of letting things go. Vanessa uses the guspirus to illustrate our emotions, feelings and states of mind.
